During this year’s 618 shopping festival, from June 1st to June 18th, JD saw transaction volume of over 45.2 billion EUR
On June 18th 1998, Richard Liu committed RMB12,000 of his savings to lease a four-square-meter retail unit in Beijing. Here he established JD Multimedia, the business that would eventually become JD.com, one of the biggest ecommerce platforms in the world.
To commemorate the company’s launch, on June 18th 2010, JD started a shopping festival, colloquially known as 618. Since then, 618 has been adopted by almost all ecommerce platforms in China and turned into a second biggest shopping event in South Eastern Asia.
This year’s 618 brought total transaction volume of over RMB 343.8 billion RMB (45.2 billion EUR) between June 1 and 18th.
Over 30,000 new brands and stores entered JD Super, JD’s online supermarket, and they brought over 2.4 million new products.
Over 20,000 international brands from more than 100 countries joined the shopping festival through cross-border ecommerce.
Over 20 designer brands saw sales increase over 15 times YOY.
Shopping for services became the new trend
During the 18-day promotion, sales of JD’s online real estate business increased 230% YOY. Sales of housekeeping and cleaning services increased 6.3 times while the order number of car maintenance increased 285%.
For this special occasion, JD.com collaborated with 12 airlines and launched 15 air-ticket mystery-box products that saw sales increase 28 times.
Genetic testing service sales increased 23 times, making it the fastest-growing category of healthcare services on JD.
