The 2020 Beijing Auto, an annual event showcasing China's rising auto market, is being held in Beijing from September 26 to October 5. This rare in-person auto show confirmed the recovery of the world's biggest car market.
China's auto market witnessed an increase in auto sales 11.6 percent in August compared to 2019. Most of the automotive executives are not surprised, and expect further growth.
Thanks to the better-than-expected market recovery, China's new energy vehicle sales surged 26 percent year on year in August. Sales of passenger vehicle also expanded, registering the fastest growth since May 2018.
Thanks to a very clear target set by the Chinese central government to reach a certain percentage of (electric) vehicles by 2030 in the market, EV startups have been blooming all around the country, gathering serious investments. Nio, Xpeng, Li Auto and WM Motor have together raised more than eight billion U.S. dollars this year.
Xpeng definitely stole the show with their first-generation prototype of a flying vehicle.
Among the other highlights is GMW’s (Great Wall Motors) three-box retro sedan, which can be hybrid or electric (to be decided depending on feedback from the market).
Audi displayed their Q4 e-tron concept at the event, while Jaguar Land Rover launched its plug-in hybrid Discovery Sport P300e, its first made-in-China new energy model.
Nissan's crossover made its China debut at the event. This is the first time Ariya has been shown publicly outside Japan after being unveiled in Yokohama.
