The 5th World Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Shanghai revealed ambitious plans for further development of AI Industry

Laid out on 30,000 m2, the 5th World Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Shanghai from September 1st to 3rd drew a lot of attention and even more investments. Leading scholars in the area of artificial intelligence, well-known entrepreneurs, and senior managers of technology companies such as Baidu, Alibaba and Huawei spoke at the conference. More than 370,000 people experienced the “Metaverse Exhibition” online, while the total number of views exceeded 638 million.

Wu Jincheng (吴金城), Head of Economy and Information Technology Committee of Shanghai, summarized the results: 16 companies have launched new products, 25 major AI Industry Projects have been signed and nearly 15 billion yuan (2.16 billion USD) of investment has been gathered. According to him, the results are outstanding. In a short span of one year, from last year's conference to this year's conference, Shanghai city only has signed a total of 166 new projects, with a total investment of 90.5 billion yuan (13 billion USD).

In the last few years, Chinese government has attached great importance to the development of the AI industry which resulted in AI sector growing at an accelerated speed. “The worth of China’s AI industry has doubled from 2018 and today it exceeds 400 billion yuan (57 billion USD). More than 3,000 enterprises are engaged in the industry" said the spokesperson of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (中华人民共和国工业和信息化部). According to the latest analysis on technology preparedness per country, which assembled numerous indicators (such as number of supercomputers, spending on AI initiatives, number of AI startups, number of AI patents and more), conducted by The Brookings Institution based in Washington, DC., China is in a close “two-horse race” with the U.S. for the technology dominance.

During the conference Zhangjiang High-Tech Park (张江高科技园区) formally revealed the concept of "Zhangjiang Super City". The city, an AI backed futuristic area covering 4.1 square kilometers in Putong New Area of Shanghai, which will accommodate R&D labs, library, universities, commercial complex, as well as sports and entertainment facilities should be completed by 2026.

Shanghai AntChain Industry Development and Innovation Center (上海蚂蚁连产业开发创新中心) was officially established at the conference, while the JD.com AI Research Institute (京东·人工智能研究院) revealed that more and more leading companies are choosing to place their core AI research centers in Shanghai.

Artificial Intelligence has found application in different domains, bringing empowerment and leap in productivity, and art is no exception. The 5th World Artificial Intelligence Conference has, for the first time, set up a special forum in order to facilitate discussion related to integration of art and technology.

It seems that China is on a mission to become the world’s undisputed technology leader.
